LIRS Extension: Lagos State Moves Tax Filing Deadline to April 21

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has officially extended the deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns to April 21, 2026.

This marks the second extension for the 2026 year of assessment, following an initial shift from March 31 to April 14.

Investigative checks by NRS Portal Guide confirm that the decision was driven by an “overwhelming response” from taxpayers across the state.

The LIRS cited the need to provide taxpayers with more time to navigate the updated digital interface and resolve submission bottlenecks.

Sources within the agency suggest that the integration with national identity databases caused slight delays for some users during the initial rollout.

The Cost of Non-Compliance: ₦100,000 Penalty Alert

Under the new 2026 tax reforms, the price for missing this final deadline has become significantly steeper.

A taxable person who fails to file their returns by April 21 is now liable to an administrative penalty of ₦100,000 in the first month of default.

If the failure persists, an additional ₦50,000 penalty will be charged for every subsequent month until the returns are filed.

This is a major increase from previous years and is part of the “sweeping penalties” introduced to enforce fiscal discipline.

Why the Digital Interface Caused Delays

The 2026 tax season is the first to operate under the full integration of state and federal identification systems.

While this ensures higher accuracy, the “digital handshake” between the LIRS eTax portal and national databases created temporary spikes in server response times.

The LIRS Executive Chairman, Ayodele Subair, described this extension as a “final grace period” to maintain the integrity and accuracy of submissions.

Taxpayers are urged to use the etax.lirs.net portal to complete their filings immediately to avoid the ₦100,000 late fee.

Manual Filings Officially Banned

As part of the modernization effort, the LIRS has reiterated that manual or “paper” tax filings are no longer accepted.

Every resident earning income in Lagos, from salaried employees to informal sector workers, must use the electronic gateway.

If you encounter errors on the portal, the agency recommends clearing your browser cache or attempting the filing during off-peak hours (between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM).

Final Pro-Tip for Lagos Taxpayers

Do not wait until April 20 to begin your submission, as traffic is expected to reach another peak in the final 48 hours.

Ensure your Payer ID and NIN are ready before logging in to ensure a smooth “One-Click” submission process.
