Lagos Extends Individual Tax Filing Deadline to April 14, 2026 (LIRS Update)

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has officially announced an extension for the filing of individual annual income tax returns for 2026.

Originally scheduled to close at midnight on March 31, the deadline has now been moved to Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

This two-week grace period provides much-needed relief for employees, high-net-worth individuals, and self-employed residents across Lagos State.

Why the Extension?

The LIRS Executive Chairman, Mr. Ayodele Subair, officially stated that the extension aims to provide taxpayers with more time to submit accurate returns.

The move is designed to ensure that no resident of Lagos is unfairly penalized for missing the original March 31st deadline.

Portal Downtime

However, investigative monitoring by the NRSPortal.ng team noticed significant technical challenges on Monday.

The official eTax portal (etax.lirs.net) was reportedly offline or inaccessible for several hours throughout the day.

This downtime caused widespread frustration as thousands of users scrambled to meet the midnight cut-off.

The 14-day grace period is a direct relief for those who were blocked by these system errors.

Taxpayers are now urged to use this extra time to resolve any pending 13-digit NRS Tax ID verification issues.

Mandatory Electronic Filing

Despite the date change, the LIRS has reiterated that the “No Paper” policy is still in full effect.

All annual returns must be submitted through the official LIRS eTax portal.

Manual filings at tax stations will not be accepted, and taxpayers are urged to use this extra time to resolve any “Payer ID” or “TIN” verification issues.

How to File During the Extension

Access the Portal: Visit etax.lirs.net and log in with your Payer ID or NIN.

Update Records: Ensure your 2025 income statements and tax reliefs are accurately uploaded. You can see the full list of required documents in our [2026 Tax Filing Checklist].

Generate Assessment: Review your final assessment before clicking the “Submit” button.

Avoid the Post-April 14 Penalty

Taxpayers are warned that this is a final extension.

Failing to file by the new April 14th deadline will result in an automatic administrative penalty of ₦100,000, plus interest on any unpaid tax liabilities.

Now that you have until April 14 to file, ensure your business records are correct. Use our [Free 2026 VAT Calculator] to verify your sales tax.
