NRS Compliant | Official 7.5% Standard Rate

*Calculated based on 2026 NRS Tax Guidelines.

How to Use the Nigeria VAT Calculator 2026

Using the NRS-compliant tool above is straightforward for both business owners and consumers.

To add tax to a service, enter the base price and click “Add VAT (+)” to see the 7.5% increase.

If you have a total receipt and want to see the original price before tax, click “Remove VAT (-).”

This ensures you are never overcharged at supermarkets or by service providers across Lagos and Nigeria.

The Math Behind the 7.5% VAT

For those who prefer to verify their numbers manually, the formula is simple.

To Add VAT (+): Take your base price and multiply it by 1.075.

Example: ₦10,000 × 1.075 = ₦10,750

To Remove VAT (-): If a price is already “VAT Inclusive,” divide the total by 1.075 to find the original cost.

Example: ₦10,750 ÷ 1.075 = ₦10,000

Is the VAT Rate in Nigeria Still 7.5%?

As of March 31, 2026, the standard Value Added Tax (VAT) rate remains 7.5% according to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).

While there have been investigative discussions regarding a potential move to 10%, the current Finance Act maintains the 7.5% threshold.

This rate applies to all taxable goods and services, ensuring a uniform tax system across all 36 states.

Items Exempt from VAT in 2026

Not everything you buy attracts a 7.5% charge under the new NRS guidelines.

To save money, you should know which items are legally VAT-Exempt:

  • Basic Food Items: Bread, cereal, fish, milk, and tubers (Yam/Cassava).

  • Medical Products: Locally manufactured drugs and basic healthcare services.

  • Education: All levels of tuition, books, and educational materials.

  • Energy: Locally produced kerosene and electricity for residential use.

If a vendor is charging you VAT on these specific items, they may be in violation of the 2026 Tax Code.

Why LIRS and State IRS Follow the NRS Rate

Many taxpayers ask if Lagos State (LIRS) or Rivers State (RIRS) have different VAT percentages.

The answer is no; VAT is a federally collected tax managed by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).

While the revenue is shared with the states, the calculation remains a flat 7.5% nationwide.

This calculator is 100% accurate for filing returns through the LIRS eTax portal or any state-level revenue platform.
